For over 20 years, law enforcement agencies in Indiana have been participating in the "Click it or Ticket" campaign.
The decision to wear a seat belt can be the difference between life or death and the Indiana State Police are enforcing their "Click it or Ticket" campaign in hopes of seeing more drivers make safe decisions.
The "Click it or Ticket" campaign began May 12 and will run until June 14.
ISP is joined by more than 250 agencies around the state to “conduct high-visibility patrols encouraging drivers and passengers to buckle up,” according to a press release.
The annual campaign, which is supported from federal funding given to ISP by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, will allow officers to work overtime, around the clock to conduct seat belt patrols.
The ICJI reported 36 percent of the 827 roadway fatalities last year were unrestrained.
“I am grateful for all the agencies involved in this campaign, which is vital to encouraging people to buckle up,” said Indiana Criminal Justice Institute Director Dave Murtaugh in a press release. “We will continue to spread the message of how crucial seat belt use is in saving lives and reducing injuries.”
University spokesperson Joan Todd said Ball State University Police Department plans to participate in the campaign, but "it’s unclear how many shifts will be covered” as officers are not required to sign up because it is an overtime assignment.
